Pioneer Housing Foundation Receives Seed Funding for Affordable Self-Contained Apartment
May 3, 2005
Pioneer Housing Foundation has been awarded up to $20,000 from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation Seed Funding initiative to conduct a need and demand study and develop preliminary drawings for a 40-unit affordable apartment targeted toward seniors. The project will be situated adjacent to Silver Birch Lodge, which is located in Sherwood Park.
On signing the funding agreement, Donald Moulds, Executive Director of Pioneer Housing Foundation, said " this is a significant step forward in the development of an affordable seniors apartment facility to serve residents of Strathcona County. We look forward to having this preliminary work completed before the end of the year".
The proposed apartment is the second stage of a project known as Aspen Village, a seniors housing village located at Sherwood Drive and Bison Way in Sherwood Park. The first stage was the development of Silver Birch Lodge, which opened in 2000.
The Seed Funding support from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation will enable Pioneer Housing Foundation to accurately determine the present and future need for affordable seniors rental housing; obtain community input on services required for a seniors rental facility that would promote aging in place; and develop preliminary drawings.
Seed Funding from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation offers financial assistance to groups and individuals for the predevelopment work on proposed housing projects that will be affordable, innovative, community-based, or any combination of these characteristics. Priority was given to proposals that address affordable housing needs in their community. The CMHC financial assistance is in the form of a grant of up to $10,000 and an interest free loan of up to $10,000.
Pioneer Housing Foundation is a Not for Profit corporation located in Strathcona County, providing affordable seniors housing within the community. Pioneer Housing Foundation owns and manages 180 lodge units at Clover Bar Lodge and Silver Birch Lodge. Pioneer Housing also manages 108 seniors self-contained apartment units on behalf of Seniors Management Services and Alberta Seniors and Community Supports.
